As one of Norway's largest municipalities, Bærum aims to be a place where older adults can live healthy, independent and meaningful lives for as long as possible. Our work is guided by principles of inclusion, participation, accessibility and lifelong well-being.

Building a Community for All Ages

Bærum Municipality is committed to creating an age-friendly community where people can age actively, safely and with dignity. We recognize that demographic change brings both opportunities and challenges, and we are working to ensure that residents of all ages can participate fully in community life.

Our Vision

Our vision is to make Bærum a community that supports people throughout the life course and enables older residents to:

  • Remain active and engaged in society
  • Live independently and safely in their own homes
  • Access services, information and support when needed
  • Participate in cultural, social and civic life
  • Experience good health, well-being and quality of life

Age-Friendly Development in Bærum

Bærum Municipality is developing and implementing policies, services and community initiatives that support healthy and active ageing. This work includes collaboration across municipal sectors as well as partnerships with residents, voluntary organizations, local communities and other stakeholders.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Social participation and inclusion
  • Accessible information and communication
  • Housing and living environments
  • Mobility, transport and accessibility
  • Health promotion and preventive services
  • Community support and care services
  • Participation and co-creation with residents
  • Reducing loneliness and strengthening social connectedness

Working with Residents and Stakeholders

An age-friendly community can only be created together with its residents.

Bærum actively seeks input from older residents, user organizations, voluntary associations and community partners. Citizen participation is an important part of planning and decision-making processes, helping ensure that services and environments reflect the needs and priorities of those who live in the municipality.

WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities

Bærum Municipality is applying to join the World Health Organization's Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities (GNAFCC).

Membership in the network will provide opportunities to:

  • Share experiences with cities and communities around the world
  • Learn from international best practices
  • Strengthen local development through collaboration and knowledge exchange
  • Promote innovation in age-friendly policies and services
  • Support continuous improvement of quality of life for older residents

Through participation in the network, Bærum aims to contribute to and benefit from global efforts to create more inclusive and age-friendly communities.

Current Status

As part of the age-friendly process, Bærum Municipality is conducting assessments and collecting knowledge related to demographic developments, resident experiences, existing services and community resources.
